SafeStudy Film Lab is a creative community program for international students across Victoria, organised by AWCPD and supported by Study Melbourne. Bringing together students from diverse backgrounds, the project offers a unique opportunity to participate in a real film production and collaboratively create an anti-scam awareness film through workshops, industry mentoring, and hands-on filmmaking experience.


What is
Safestudy Film Lab?
SafeStudy Film Lab is a Victoria-wide filmmaking program for international students, organised by AWCPD and supported by Study Melbourne. Participants will collaborate with peers and industry mentors to create an anti-scam awareness film inspired by real student experiences.
From story development and scriptwriting to filming and public screening, the program provides hands-on experience within a professional film production environment while promoting student safety, community engagement, and fraud awareness.
Ways to Participate
The SafeStudy Film Lab Anti-Scam Film Workshop is open to all international students. Participants may choose one of the following pathways based on their interests, professional background, and availability.
Story Submission
Have you experienced, witnessed, or heard about scams affecting international students?
We invite you to share real stories related to fraud prevention, scams, and student safety. Selected submissions will serve as inspiration for the development of the final screenplay, which will be created in collaboration with the project’s writing team.
Stories may include:
* Personal experiences involving scams or fraud;
* Real cases involving friends, classmates, or members of the community;
* Reflections and observations on international student safety and scam awareness.
Contributors whose stories are selected and significantly inform the
screenplay will receive:
* An official Letter of Appreciation from the organisers;
* Acknowledgement in the film credits;
* An invitation to the film premiere and project showcase events.

Crew Recruitment
This project will be organised following a professional film production model, providing participants with hands-on experience in a collaborative filmmaking environment.
Students interested in joining the production team are invited to submit their CV and preferred role(s) to the organising committee.
Positions include, but are not limited to:
* Director
* Assistant Director
* Documentary Director
* Producer
* Screenwriter
* Director of Photography (DOP)
* Camera Assistant
* Gaffer / Lighting Technician
* Sound Recordist
* Production Designer
* Script Supervisor
* Casting Director
* Editor
* Marketing & Distribution Coordinator
Applicants may be invited to attend an interview before final crew positions are confirmed.
All selected crew members will receive:
* An official Certificate of Participation;
* Screen credit in the final film and promotional materials;
* Practical experience working within a professional film production structure;
* Opportunities to collaborate with industry mentors and emerging creatives.
Cast Recruitment
We are also seeking actors and performers who are interested in participating in the production.
Applicants may submit:
* A brief personal introduction;
* A recent headshot;
* Previous acting experience (if applicable);
* A showreel or self-tape (optional).
Selected applicants may be invited to attend an audition, after which the final cast will be confirmed.
All cast members will receive:
* An official Certificate of Participation;
* Screen credit in the final film;
* Professional on-set acting experience;
* Opportunities to participate in public screenings and showcase events.


Project Highlights
The workshop will follow the complete workflow of a professional film production, from story development and scriptwriting to crew recruitment, casting, production, post-production, and public exhibition.Participants will gain first-hand experience of how a film project is developed and delivered while contributing to an important social initiative aimed at increasing scam awareness among international students.Through the adaptation of real-life experiences and collaborative filmmaking, the project seeks to promote student safety, encourage community engagement, and provide valuable industry experience for emerging filmmakers and creatives.
